SEAMARKS In the Basin series, I apply water and gouache washes that respond to and resist containment by brush or paper. I draw lines on thick rag paper with an exacto knife and then apply multiple layers of barely pigmented washes, inviting the paint to pool, drip, and run its course over the paper. The series’ ocean and basin images – vast, abundant, portending and whimsical – emphasize the sea’s massive scale, rhythmic motion and continuity. Like overfilled balloons, the basins reveal only a portion of their full shape as they loom over or pour into the ocean below.
