Emily Payne on her work:
Artist and Berkeley resident Emily Payne was born in San Francisco and grew up in Mill Valley, California and Amherst, Massachusetts. She received her B.A. from Oberlin College in Ohio and her M.F.A. in printmaking and book arts from San Francisco State University in 2000.
Payne uses different materials such as wire, thread, gouache paint, rag papers and parts of used books and shoes to produce both two- and three-dimensional work. In this current exhibition of three related bodies of work (the Ocean, Basin and Float series), Payne draws or incises lines with an x-acto knife before she paints layers of gouache and water washes onto paper.
This collection of work is dedicated to her mother, Nina Payne, who died in July 2006.
