Statement
After exploring gold leaf and metallic pigments with oil
paint on canvas and wood for the better part of a decade,
I began in 2005 to use anodized aluminum as my painting surface.
The first piece on metal incorporated my last technique,
layers of powdered mica glazed with oil paint to produce
an abstract work with a pristine surface. After working
for years to achieve this surface, it was now a given, and
my interest shifted to the question of how to use this beautiful
silver panel in a new way. I found that the application
of paint on the metal created a wonderful drawing environment.
My newest work is a second suite of paintings in the series “Along
the Five”, generated from imagination influenced by
countless trips between Oakland and Los Angeles along Highway
Five, fields, orchards, stands of trees, rushing by.
