Artist Statement

Jan Zaitlin has two degrees from CCAC (now known as California College of the Arts). The first was in Industrial Design; the second was in Painting and Drawing. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, has worked as a custom furniture maker and designer and is now a full time artist.

This body of work grew out of her interest in blending organic forms and materials with man-made, architectural constructions-- "a kind of organized nature". Much of the imagery is inspired by her earlier work as a landscape painter.

The wood is Port Orford Cedar, the material used in Japanese temples. She has used a variety of media for the paintings, including ink, pastel and encaustic. After painting, each individual part is hand rubbed with beeswax before the final assembly.
